Patterns of distorted thinking (12). Are we victims of our emotions?

personal values | Psychology | self improvement

The concept number twelve is the believing that we don’t have control over our emotions and that we are victims of these without being able to control the way we feel. This idea is completely incorrect.

The reality is that we exercise a great control on our emotional states and if we stay alert using our rational thinking, we will learn how to control our emotions in a very effective way. If the emotions control us it is because we allow them concentrating on the negative thoughts.

We feel as we think. It is extremely important to monitor the quality of our thoughts, to control this way the quality of our lives. Each one of us is responsible for his emotional own life.

The cycle is: Thought, emotion and reaction. When you are depressed, if you analyze the causes, you will realize that this is due to a series of negative thoughts that you are sustaining about your own person. In the same way, if you feel cheerful you’ll realize that you are fully responsible for that feeling of happiness, simply because you have been concentrating on positive things.

We all are responsible for our emotional states. We are not victims of the emotions. We have full control on the way that we feel. The emotional reaction is always our own responsibility. If we consider this carefully, we will learn how to control our emotions in a very effective way. If the emotions control us, it is because we allow this to happen when concentrating on negative thoughts. The way we think, the way we feel.
