My at risk grandson - what is to be done? Hutts Challenge day two.
A couple of weeks ago my at risk grandson went missing for two days, and became the subject of the police and media attention. He is 18 years old, but has certain health issues and needs medication.
We and the family really believed the worst, thinking he had taken to the hills and certain personal danger. We had a number of the family around and it felt like a tangi or the first day of a funeral here in New Zealand.
He left at lunchtime Sunday and was seen coming back from Wellington City on Tuesday morning by a member of the family on the way to work.We were all very pleased to see him home safely, but have absolutely no idea where he was on Monday.
Last night he did another runner, and again we began to worry for his safety - but he turned up out of the blue this morning, Monday about 10-45am, in the best of health.
But something will have to be done for this young man who has mental health and intellectual problems. But there are not too many facilities available here any more, unless there is an emergency. Our mental health services have been cut back too much over the years, and intellectual handicap support is limited as well. It builds up the stress on we grandparents now in our 60's.
