Huey Lewis & The News "Do You Believe In Love"

Despite their enormous success in the '80s when all they touched seemed to turn to gold, Huey Lewis & The News never quite found much favor with the critics. However, the group's roots actually find them involved with musicians including
Nick Lowe, Dave Edmunds, and Elvis Costello.
Lewis and keyboardist Sean Hopper formed the band Clover in the early '70s as a country-rock band. The act garnered a significant following in and around their San Francisco base and were urged by Lowe to move to England in the mid-'70s as the band's sound compared favorably with the pub-rock scene that was popular in the UK at the time. As Clover, they released two album during the period which failed to attract much attention, as well as backing Lowe, Edmunds, and Costello on his debut album My Aim Is True.
Failing to find an audience in England, Lewis and Hopper returned to the States, putting together American Express with musicians who had previously backed Van Morrison. A failed single release and an additional guitarist later and the group finally secured a record deal, changing their name to Huey Lewis & The News. Their fortunes still didn't change as the band's eponymous 1980 release also failed to ignite.
However, in 1982 producer Mutt Lange, who had produced Clover at one time, was broad on board. Not only did he produce that year's Picture This, he also wrote "Do You Believe In Love." With its irrepresible bounce, straight-forward rock sound, and infectious, doo-wop-influenced chorus, the band at last had the song to break their careers. It quickly rose up the charts in the spring of '82, eventually reaching the Top Ten and peaking at #7. It wouldn't be their biggest hit, but it helped push Picture This past platinum sales and pave the way toward making Huey Lewis & The News one of the most successful mainstream acts of the '80s.
