Madonna "Crazy For You"

It might be hard to remember twenty years later, but there was a time when we lived in a world without Madonna. In March, 1985, Ms. Ciccone was only a year removed from her first hit single, "Holiday," and had just notched her first #1, "Like A Virgin," a few months before. "Crazy For You" would be her first departure from the dance-pop style of her first hits and showcase her ability with a ballad.

The song was released on the soundtrack to the film "Vision Quest," a movie targeted at the summer, teen audience. While the movie did well, it wasn't a blockbuster, but it hardly hindered "Crazy For You." It was the second hit from the movie's soundtrack (following Journey's "Only The Young") and the gentle song of devotion found an audience quickly despite its change in direction from Madonna's prior hits (and despite competing for airplay with another Madonna single, "Material Girl"). Less than a month after entering the US Top 40, "Crazy For You" had already rocketed into the Top Ten, becoming Madonna's third such hit.

In May, it reached the top spot and although it remained there for only one lone week, it would become the first of many memorable ballads Madonna would chart with over the years. It would also prove to be more successful than the more typical, upbeat "Material Girl," which would peak at #2 shortly before "Crazy For You."
